Format USB flash drive to NTFS format (For Win XP only. Vista users can directly format the USB drive to NTFS format) In your Windows, go to Control panel - system - hardware - Device manager.
Under the disk drives section, right click on the USB storage drive and select Properties. Go to the Policies tab, select optimize for performance. Open your Windows Explorer, you should see the USB storage drive in the inventory. Right click and select Format.
Select NTFS from the drop down bar. For Windows XP Download. Extract the zipped files to your desktop. Open a command prompt ( Start – Program – Accessories – Command Prompt). I get this error in the command prompt: C:UsersRoyDesktopwin-7bootbootsect /nt60 f: This version of C:UsersRoya NeissaniDesktopwin-7bootbootsect.exe is not co mpatible with the version of Windows you’re running.
Check your computer’s syste m information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. Is this a result of downloading the 64 bit version of windows7 or having the 32 but version of vista home premium? How can i get this working? According to the Torrent website demonoid.com this guy with nickname “djdanster” posted Windows 7 Home Premium Build 7000 BETA direct from Microsoft Connect.
Not sure if its fake or not. The first comment of a user asked the question “Is this for real?”. According to another torrent by “orbit30”, it seems there will be 4 types of windows 7home basic, home premium, business, and ultimate, because I saw a screenshot. Ofcourse, this is a torrent websitenot sure how reliable this information is! Demonoid cannot be held responsible for what its users post, or any other actions of its users. ———————————————————— So.I will try to do all the above steps again that you mention on windows XP, when I have time. Thanks again Damien.
At first I was unable to get this to work, so I did some research and this is how I go it to work. I did a few things different, first after selecting the disk I did a clean, then create partition primary and then select partition, after making the partition active I did a format fs=fat32 and then assign and exit. Finally I ran bootsect /nt60 X: (X is the drive latter of your USB drive ) and then copied the contents of my Windows 7 directory to the usb drive. I am going to experiment with some of the files in the windows 7 directory and see if I cant make this fit on a 2GB thumb drive.
I got it to work after I modified a few of your steps. Select disk 1 (assuming disk 1 is your usb drive, make sure you use list disk if you are not sure. Clean – New step 4. Create partition – New step 5. Select Partition 1 6.
Format fs=fat32 – new step 8. Assign – new step 9.
Exit Then I opened a command prompt and went to the windows 7 directory and run bootsect /nt60 X: (X is the drive latter of your USB drive ) finally copy the windows 7 directory over to the usb drive. I dont know if this will work for anyone else but it worked for me.
Thanks again for the great post. Hello, Please help!!! Here what I have done: 1.Download Windows 7 iso file, which I put it in isoBuster and extracted. 2.Because I have listen it is better to make clean installation,I bought new WD external HDD- Passport Studio 500 /contents/base/binaire.php3 Gb and put it all information from my PC to HDD (around 90Gb very important data + /contents/win/winintro.php3 windows 7 of course)! 3.I run “cmd” and get in DOS – “diskpart” – “list disk” (Because there were nothing, not disk 1,2,3-i just select disk 1-don`t ask me why,coz i don`t know for myself, because i am stupid!!!) – select disk 1 – clean After i wrote “clean”,I disconnect usb cable, because I afraid-what does “clean” means!!?? For god sake-i have all informations from last 6 years on my external hard disk Now,my WD doesn`t work, everything is ok in “drive manager”,when i connect usb cable there is the external usb hard drive showed up on the Safely Remove Hardware list right down, but I can not enter into the disk-inside and I am so afraid and desperate and don`t know what to do How you can see,I am beginner, but please tell me what is the best solution for me to do now and to don`t lose my data on WD (if i already didn`t lost:( Please, please help-with days I don`t know what to do. My e-mail is viamakedonia yahoo dot com please write me there.
What I have tried: connecting my WD with 3 deferent cables – usb and firewire in deferent ports. Installing drivers from wd site When I check Device Manager it shows that the device is installed and working properly but it will not show in “my computer” and I can’t access it.
Before the problem,my HDD appeared as drive H: I wouldn’t be half as frustrated if it hadn’t been working properly before this.Plus-ALL data is on my HDD,and I don`t even know if it is still there:( I do it this: 2 Step Solution for XP users: Part 1: Go to Control panel - Performance and Maintenance (cannot be in classic view to see this link) - Administrator Tools - Services - Universal Plug and Play If Universal Plug and Play is set to manual switch to automatic. Part 2 Double Click Safely Remove icon on the bottom right- Select device-click Properties - click Volumes - click Populate - hit OK - if nothing shows it may need to be formatted Also i was in DISK MANAGEMENT,but except formating disk,I don`t see solution:( And formating will erase all data on the disk, isn`t it?!
(if i have it,of course). Again nothing:(:( It will be everything ok if I re-install Windows xp?! All if I repair Windows XP through installation process? Do I have problem with MBR?
Should I format my WD? Common guys,I am sure that some one of you knows, there must be way to solve the problem! Thanks in advance!!!!!!.Win7RC 64BIT!. The 64bit bootsect.exe wont work in a 32bit enviroment. You will need a 32bit version. I had downloaded both Win7RC 32bit and 64bit versions.
So I just used the 32bit bootsect.exe with the “bootsect /nt60” switch to set the usb drive bootable. Then I copied the 64bit files accross.Non Booting USB. I was still unable to boot from usb despite setting 1st, 2nd and 3rd Boot Devices correctly in the Bios. Even when I set all boot devices to cancel, it still booted into WinXP!?!? I then investigated a BIOS option called “Hard Disk Boot Priority” that appeared above my 1st, 2nd and 3rd Boot Device settings. This option allowed me to change the physical drive order that the BIOS checks through.
With the USB stick plugged in, this became an option. When I set the USB as the first device, the USB booted in to Win7 install.NB. I am using a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard.
I have not installed Win7 yet as I am still backing up files. However I see no reason that the method above will screw up a 64bit install. If you do not have a 32bit Vista or Win7 disc / iso to get at a 32bit bootsect.exe, I suggest “googling” bootsect.exe and downloading just that bit.
I am attempting this scheme with a Seagate FreeAgent Go USB drive. No need to format the drive, as it came formatted with NTFS.
However, I decided to shrink the original 250GB partition to leave room for a small bootable partition. From WIN7 Beta 64, I created the new partition, formatted it NTFS, made it active. Used Bootsect from the downloaded image, and it said it was successful. Copied all files to the new partition. I set the hard drive sequence to make the GO drive first and rebooted. Still boots from my internal hard drive.
Very good article. Followed your procedure to a “T” using a 4 GB Corsair USB flash drive as the target, from Windows XP Pro. When attempting to boot from that device, the boot sector is found but single error message “Cannot load operating system” is displayed on an otherwise blank monitor screen. One difference observed afterward from MBRwiz, the USB flash drive has a start sector of 32 rather than 63 (would like to have inserted screen shot from MBRwiz). Can you recommend an internals-level description of the boot sequence from a low level? Hi im having problems when i get to the last part before you copy it over to your flash drive.

Hi Vladimir, I can imagine how it is painful to loose everything in just couple of seconds. So, right now I will be concentrating to get your data back, rather than to how installing Windows 7, which you can do later (with your data hard disk out of the computer. Most probably all your data is still there, the best case you can get it back in couple of minutes, sometimes and as it is a 500G hard disk it may take 5 hours for a recovery software to get your files back.
The clean command did removed partition or volume formatting from the disk by zeroing sectors. By default, only the MBR or GPT partitioning information and any hidden sector information on MBR (Master Boot Record) disks is overwritten. What we will try to do, is to rebuild that MBR records, either by some third party software (which I prefer) or by some commands. First I suggest you try to download & try some recovery software like Paragon recovery CD, Acronis Recovery CD, or partition recovery sw and use the fix Boot Record option. The rebuilding operation should be quick (send me an email alexegrus @ yahoo dot com if you do not know how to get them) If it did not work, then check this Alternatively we will have to get the files themselves by using a file recovery application like recover my files, disk doctor undelete. Best of Luck, you gona get them I believe so.
A normal USB drive usually come with Fat32 filesystem, but in some situations, it can be in NTFS as well. If it is NTFS, you probably won’t be able to delete the file or format because of the file permissions on the drive. To fix this, right-click on the drive and selecting Properties. Click on the Security tab, click Advanced. Click on the “apply to all child directories” checkbox, and click apply. Next, still on the Security tab, select Add, type in ‘everyone’ and press OK. Select “Full Control’ in the permissions box.

You should now be able to delete all the files or format the drive now. Since this article was posted, we have gone one step ahead. Not me but some people who managed to install Windows Vista/7/XP to a USB or Flash Drive. I myself Installed Windows 7 64Bit to a USB Drive 7.46 GB in size.
Even that the recommended size is 10 GB I was able to installed it on this USB and after booting Windows 7 From the USB and installing Device Drivers and configuring the Desktop I ended up with only 500 MB of Free USB drive space. And I gotta tell you I was really surprised that with the first attempt I got it working. But the technology is there and is Free. All you have to do is copy 3 files into the folder that contain the scripts that install Windows to USB and run the main script (a.CMD File). Here is the link for anyone interested, and remember I did it and I'm none special with computers, just reading one of the script files got me dizzy but all you have to do is apply what is there: NT 6.x fast installer: install win7 directly to usb external drive.
Hi, I have a Laptop whose Optical Drive is not working. It has no Boot from USB Device option in the bios. So basically I am not able to use bootable flashdisk or Cd rom to Install Windows.
I tried to install windows by removing the Hardisk and hooking it up to another machine and then returning it back to my Laptop. The problem is that I get the blue screen of death when it loads. I updated the bios to see if I could get the usb boot device option but alas no. I request for any ideas which might help me format My laptop. Thanks in advance.
Hi Dean, I believe that you are mistaken. Linux Mint (or any other linux) are not programs, they are operating systems, like Windows 7 is. Difference is that mint is linux based operating system and 7 is windows based operating system. Also you dont need to do steps described above for preparing Linux USB instalation (most linux instalations like Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc are distributed in form of an live CD/DVD which have all needed tools for installation including disc partitioning manager), all you need to do is download and use program unetbootin. Yes it is that easy with linux.
